Launched in 2014 around Secretary Kerry’s Our Ocean conference, Fishackathon was established to bring together volunteer coders to create tools to address challenges in sustainable fishing around the world.   Kicking off Earth Day 2016, the U.S. Department of State will hold the third annual Fishackathon from April 22-24. Volunteer coders, technologists, and designers will spend a weekend developing usable solutions to problem statements solicited from fisheries experts around the world.

China

06 March 2016  China’s President Warns Taiwan Against Moves Toward Independence(VOA News)  Chinese President Xi Jinping has issued a strong warning to Taiwan and its incoming, independence-leaning government.   According to the official Xinhua news agency, Xi told delegates at the annual meeting of China’s parliament Sunday that Beijing would “resolutely contain Taiwan independence secessionist activities in any form,” and would never allow the “historical tragedy” of a split to occur again.
China and Taiwan have been split since 1949 when Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist forces fled the mainland after losing the civil war to Mao Zedong’s communist army. Beijing considers self-ruled Taiwan a renegade province, and vows to bring the island back under its control – by force, if necessary.

Syrian, Iraqi Refugees

07 March 2016  Some Syrians, Iraqis Join Relocation Scheme; Others Now Want False Passports (VOA News)  On Sunday more than 50 Syrians and Iraqis opted to enter a European Union relocation scheme that in theory should guarantee them placement in an EU country, although they don’t get to pick which one. .. But with only 325 actually relocated under the scheme that was introduced by the EU last year, they still risk being disappointed or condemned to months of living in limbo.  The EU plan announced last year to relocate 66,400 refugees from Greece has proven so far a failure. States have only pledged 1,539 spaces, and there have been only 325 actual relocations, according to Adrian Edwards, the spokesman for the UN’s refugee agency.
