The Facility Management Office at the U.S. Embassy London is in search of a highly skilled Generator Technician who will be responsible for maintaining all generators and related building systems within the New London Embassy and other locations. The position will be called upon to perform related maintenance activities and occasional welding duties at any of the properties owned by the U.S. Embassy.

A City & Guilds or NVQ Level 2 in a field relating to power generating plants or equivalent is required.

Must have served a supervised apprenticeship, or specialised training in the repair and maintenance of standby generator and/or uninterrupted power supply systems. Have post apprenticeship work experience in the assigned specialised discipline is required.

Level 4 Fluent writen and oral is required.

NLE:- Comprehensive working knowledge of all mechanical systems is required. External GO/LTL:-  The incumbent is required to know the internal working on an internal combustion engine, torque values at various RPMs, and methods and standards for routine maintenance on internal combustion engines. Must have a very good technical understanding on how diesel engines are sized for generators in order to obtain optimum performance from both pieces of the packaged unit. Must know how to adjust valves, change filters and belts, adjust speed to achieve frequency levels (50 or 60 Hz), and make minor repairs. Must know how to research information on the internet in order to get up to date information from the generator manufacturer. Knowledge of fire and life safety codes and standards is required.

Must have the ability to evaluate a job, select materials, assess the impact the work has on others and apply a valid solution when necessary. The ability to identify problems or dangers and report such incidents or issues through the management structure is required. The ability to communicate in a timely way all aspects of the job with regard to queries that the management customer base may have is required. Ability to work as part of a team is required. Good interpersonal skills are required. Ability to work under pressure and to tight timescales is required. A flexible approach to working as part of an after-hours, emergency call out rota is required. Ability to diagnose and repair diesel engines, large packaged generator and alternator units; testing electrical components and taking equipment readings with various meters,hand, power, and specialty tools to determine appropriate repairs is required. Additional skills include installation of emergency standby generator systems; installation of plumbing lines required for the transmission and distribution of diesel fuel; distinguishing frequencies and sounds, color codes, elevated noise levels and odors in the operation of equipment in order to troubleshoot for repairs. Additional abilities include responding to emergency situations in an efficient and timely manner to effect immediate repairs; work in various adverse conditions such as tight or enclosed spaces, on ladders at various heights, and in temperature extremes, indoors or outdoors to complete work assignments; communicate orally and in writing with coworkers, contractors and vendors to obtain and provide pertinent information. Must be computer literate, able to navigate through the Microsoft Office Suite software including MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and Power Point; able to draft reports and create spreadsheets, and able to write e-mails and research information on the Internet. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to handle a large workload and multiple tasks. Must be organized. Must possess welding skills related to plasma and torch cutting, stick and/or MIG as required. A current full (manual) UK/EU/EEA driver’s license is required. Ability to safely and confidently operate a van (Class B) in and around central London is required. A willingness and aptitude to learn/train in new technologies for the New London Embassy (NLE) project is required.
