Ambassador Johnson’s remarks at the Launch of the Mayflower Autonomous Vehicle

Ambassador Johnson giving remarks at the launch ceremony of the Mayflower400 autonomous robotic ship, Plymouth, September 16, 2020.

Because as we embark on this new era of marine exploration together it is clear to the world that in America and Britain and in countries like our old friend and partner, the Netherlands the pioneering spirit of the Mayflower really does live on!

Four centuries after the famous Mayflower voyage across the Atlantic, the U.S. and the
UK are once again setting sail from Plymouth to make history.

We’re heading out with the same spirit of adventure, determination, and vision for the future.

This Mayflower will become one of the first full sized autonomous ships to ever cross the Atlantic.

It’s a project of tremendous sophistication and innovation.

This ship is powered by the most cutting-edge artificial intelligence ever known.

And I want to congratulate everyone who has worked so hard to make this happen.

Particularly the entire team at IBM, at Promare and at the universities of Plymouth and Birmingham.

Due to COVID, all those talented people couldn’t be here in person today.

But I want to thank them all personally for making this four hundred year anniversary special.

This is a moment when our past meets our future.

And it is a very proud moment.

Because as we embark on this new era of marine exploration together it is clear to the world that in America and Britain and in countries like our old friend and partner, the Netherlands the pioneering spirit of the Mayflower really does live on!

So God bless the Mayflower – 1 and 2.

And may all of our countries continue to advance and prosper together for many more centuries to come!
