The U.S. and UK Must Stand Together to Cut Off the Iranian Regime’s Funds for Terror

Ambassador Robert Wood Johnson

We will work as closely as possible with our allies and partners to accomplish this, with the ultimate goal of concluding a good deal that ensures the safety of our citizens and addresses the full scope of the Iranian regime’s malign activities.

This month, the United States has turned up the pressure on Iran by imposing the toughest-ever sanctions to starve the regime of money it uses to fund terrorism and regional instability. Last week our European partners joined us by announcing proposed sanctions on Iranian intelligence officials suspected of plotting assassinations in EU Member States. This is a welcome step forward, but this progress could be undermined by the EU-sponsored proposal to establish a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) that would enable companies to circumvent U.S. sanctions. Continuing to do business with the regime only keeps funds flowing to the world’s biggest state sponsor of terror, enabling Iran’s violent support for terrorists, militants, and proxies, and enriching the regime at the expense of the Iranian people.

The costs of doing business with Iran is continued terrorist activities — both inside Europe and across the globe. This includes a thwarted terrorist plot to bomb a rally in Paris in July and a disrupted assassination plot in Denmark in October. Partners and allies around the world, including our friends in Europe, share our concerns regarding the Iranian regime’s threat to the world. We all have concerns regarding the regime’s ballistic missile program, their financing of terrorism, and their stoking of instability throughout the Middle East and the entire world.

Businesses understand this risk and are making smart decisions to leave Iran. More than 100 companies have cut their business ties with Iran, and we anticipate that number will grow. We commend these companies for making the right choice. The United States will continue to impose maximum pressure on the Iranian regime until it changes its malign behavior.

We will work as closely as possible with our allies and partners to accomplish this, with the ultimate goal of concluding a good deal that ensures the safety of our citizens and addresses the full scope of the Iranian regime’s malign activities.
